Frequently Asked Questions

1.            Q.    Do you take credit/debit cards?

               A.    Afraid not! If too many people subscribe then it starts becoming a bit of a problem for us refunding them through their card company. Moreover if the Treasurer has to write more than ten cheques a month the bank charges us £10 a time, seriously! By using a P.O./cheque system our whole system is kept cheap and simple. There may well scope in the future to take credit card payments using a new system currently on trial in America. Until then though, sorry.

2.            Q.    Why won't you take money?

               A.    Because it is safer all round to post a P.O. or cheque. The Treasurer simply cannot guarantee the safe receipt of cash any more than the prospective member could guarantee its safe delivery!

3.            Q.     How safe are the tickets?

               A.    Very! Each ticket has the name and address of the treasurer and secretary on the back as well as both their thumbprints! The sale of the tickets to the club is transacted and counter-witnessed by both club officials. The sale is transacted by a certified agent of Camelot (the retailer) and immediately recorded by Camelot. Every member receives a list of the entries and the tickets themselves are kept in a fire-proof safe in a constantly occupied house that is owned by a policeman (one of the Treasurer's brothers, also a member, actually).

4.            Q.    What happens if someone duplicates the club's entries for their own use?

               A.   Er, Father Christmas would cross them off his presents list? Seriously, they would have to be a complete idiot to do this. Apart from costing them a great deal of money they would also have to write out all 200 tickets themselves and then, if the jackpot came up, have to share their winnings with us!

If it came to light, though, that this was about to/had already happened we would simply have to change the entries! We try not to change them though because apart from the sheer tediousness of making out new tickets people have got very attached to "their" entries and firmly believe that they are the only set that will ever win for them! [I've tried persuading them otherwise but people always believe only what they want to believe don't they!]

5.            Q.    What is the biggest prize you all have ever won?

               A.    See rule 11 of the club's Rules and Procedures.

6.            Q.    How much am I likely to win?

                A.    Oh no - not again! This is just about the most stupid question that I get asked - and probably the most frequent! If I could work what the future held would I be sitting here typing this and thinking about work tomorrow, or would I be swanning around on the deck of a brand new yacht somewhere in the Med? Please think hard about this and don't ever, ever ask me how much we're all going to win because, quite frankly, I haven't got a bloody clue!

                A.    [That was the Treasurer's answer, I have shortened it by two thirds and deleted most of the swear words. Please see rule 12 in Rules and Procedures - Club Secretary.]

7.            Q.    What are the chances of winning the various prizes in the lottery?

                A.    The answers below are fairly exact regarding the odds and pretty general regarding the payouts. A more detailed picture of the prize structure is obtainable directly from Camelot itself - telephone them on their local rate number; 0845 9100000.

Assuming you bought a single, lucky dip entry your chances of getting:-

3 numbers up are one in 57;  this wins you a guaranteed £10.

4 numbers up are one in 1,033;   you would probably win about £100 - maybe less.

5 numbers up are one in 55,492;  and you can look forward to getting £1,000 or more.

5 numbers up, plus the bonus ball are one in 2,330,636;  this nets you something near £100,000.

The chance of winning the Jackpot outright is one in 13,983,816!

The overall chance of any single entry winning any single prize is one in 54!

8.            Q.    How much does Camelot give back in prize money?

               A.    Its actually printed on the back of the ticket you write out! Generally speaking Camelot forms a cash prize-pool for every draw that consists of 45% of their ticket receipts. If the jackpot isn't won then the money gets "rolled-over" to the next draw. This can happen up to three time after which the prize fund is divided between the five-number-and-bonus-ball winners. Other monies may be  (and have been) added at Camelot's discretion to boost public interest!

9.            Q.    Will the Club keep going even when Wembley gets knocked down?

               A.    Yes!

10.            Q.    Can you get me tickets for the next F.A. Cup Final?

                 A.    No!
